Can I have a wedding in Alaska in the dead of winter?
Yes! You absolutely can! We love winter weddings in Alaska. It’s a magical place with blankets of snow, the auroras in the evening, and mountains dusted in white.
Jordan and Seoyoung had a micro-wedding in Girdwood, Alaska, in December of 2021. They rented a home off of Sproat Road where everyone stayed the night and got ready the next morning for the wedding. Then, we had their first look outside the rental home.
The three of us (Jordan, Seoyoung, and Lena, the photographer) went to Moose Meadow in downtown Girdwood, near Alyeska Resort. It was a wee bit chilly for sure, but the photos (you’ll see below) are to die for! So romantic!
Yes, having a winter wedding is cold. But, here are our tips to make the most out of your winter wedding portraits:
- Wear wool layers under your wedding clothes.
- Have the groom keep hand warmers ready to go in his pockets. You can hold them when you grab each other’s hands or tuck them into the flowers that you hold.
- Keep thick, down jackets nearby. We’ll constantly put them on and take them off.
- Have wool socks and a warm pair of waterproof winter boots
- Have a thermos of hot chocolate (or something stronger) to warm your insides in between photo locations.
- Be patient. It’s cold, technology falters every now and then, and moving in the snow takes a lot of effort.
- Lastly, have fun! Play in the snow, throw it in the air, walk through snow-covered trees, and have a snowball fight.
Embrace it and you’ll have the most spectacular winter wedding, just like Jordan and Seoyoung!
