Northern Lights & Denali Flight-Seeing

What a day! I got up this morning at 6:30am to do a flight with some friends around the Ruth Glacier in Denali National Park. We got halfway up the Gorge when moderate turbulence and winds of 40-50mph turned us back towards Talkeetna. We did get a few good photos but I was too busy flying the plane through the bumps to take more than a handful. After that I raced home to meet with one of our recent brides to work on her wedding albums, then a baby and family photo shoot, then hockey and finally, the grande finale for my whole day, Aurora!!! It was one of the best displays I’ve seen, if not the best. So many different colors and lots and lots of movement. We had a whole crew up in Glen Alps – Josh Martinez and his whole family came up here and we brought out a portable heater and watched the show for over an hour until it finally faded away. Tomorrow looks good too! We might get more photos yet. Alaska really is the coolest place you could ever live, where else could I have done all that stuff in one day??

These turned out great! What a show. My family was pretty stoked to get such an incredible introduction to the auroras. Thanks for the driveway hospitality tonight, maybe we’ll see you again tomorrow night. Oh, and is that 205 I see, in the first flying photo?

  2. Wowowow, I’m so impressed — and so envious! We spent the night in the airport instead. It was fun flying with you, at least. I got a couple posted from the airport: http://www.synappedphoto.com/Travel/Alaska-Iditarod-2011/16071600_HwByL#1211731016_TipNr
