Josh Martinez and I just finished an epic adventure that led us to the prettiest beach either of us had ever been to. We had great weather the whole time, it was a beautiful 11 mile hike to Kalalau beach along some pretty rugged coastline, and we were able to enjoy days of swimming, orange-tree climbing (all the oranges at the bottom were already picked), bathing under a waterfall, and doing nothing.
If anyone is looking for the ultimate cheap adventure for under $500 per person for a week, here’s our secret to a succesful trip. Anyone can do this if you like to hike and have camped before….
Wait for Alaska Air airfare sale to Honolulu for $400. Use companion fare for $100. Arrive in Honolulu at 7:15 and catch the 8:45 flight to Lihue for $130 rdtrip/pp. Get a cheap hotel in Lihue. Catch bus number 500 to Hanalei for $2.00/pp. Get stove fuel at pedals and paddles and stock up on any needed food items at the grocery store. Eat one last hamburger or cooked meal at the snack shop (double cheeseburger $6!) and hitch-hike about 8 miles to the trailhead. Get on the trail by 10am or so and you should be able to make the 11 miles by sunset. Paradise awaits!
Check it out.. And plan your own trip! So easy and so cheap! There’s a lot of little secrets I cant share on this blog but e-mail me for details if you’re really interested!
